The April 2019 Meeting featured a presentation by member Denis Blanchet focusing on:
Early Scholarly Analyses of Jane Austen's Works
A look at commentary on Jane Austen from 1811 to 1870. Her works are seen as representative of a new kind of novel in which characterization takes precedence over the improbable incidents of earlier novels and romances. Some even compare her to Shakespeare and Molière in her talent for creating characters. However, many reviewers felt the need to introduce Jane Austen to their readers and to summarize the novels, as she was not as well-known as they felt she should be. Some criticized her for
writing about ordinary people and everyday life, but most agree that she demonstrated great mastery of her art.
